Give the drama with Wizards during January 2023, it remains to be seen if they can get their act together enough to have a proper celebration of the 50th Anniversary of OD&D.

To me it is a no-brainer. They desperately need to create some good will and this is low hanging fruit.

Will they grab it? That remains to be seen.

Daithi MacLiamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164875676148219662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000665341124771922.post-23560848718549159572023-01-01T00:01:00.018-05:002023-01-01T00:01:00.202-05:00Original Dungeons & Dragons Has Its 50th Anniversary In January 2024
OD&D will have its 50th Anniversary in January 2024 and in February 2024 I will celebrate 50 years as an OD&D Referee!

Too many of the original gaming group have passed away, I am 85 myself and not sure I will make it to that 50th anniversary. But whether I am around to see it or not, all of you should be celebrating that day and that year. I am betting that WotC does nothing fan friendly to celebrate OD&D 50th Anniversary nor will they pay any homage to Arneson and Gygax and other people who were important in the creation of OD&D.

So I am going to attempt to blog between now and then and call out some of the people who helped bring OD&D to life.

I hope to do a lot of gaming in 2024, I hope that you do too!
Daithi MacLiamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164875676148219662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000665341124771922.post-77057932659299538542019-09-24T21:58:00.000-04:002019-09-24T21:58:25.195-04:00Blackmoor Week Day I 2019Blackmoor Week kicks off today and concludes on October 1st with Dave Arneson Game Day.
This week we honor Dave Arneson the Creator of Blackmoor, the Creator of the underpinnings of Dungeons & Dragons and co-author of same. This is Blackmoor Week running from 9/24/19 through 10/1/19. Join me in honoring and remembering Dave Arneson and the debt of gratitude the entire gaming community owes to him.Daithi MacLiamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164875676148219662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000665341124771922.post-47367759189347266162019-01-27T01:38:00.000-05:002019-01-27T01:38:00.704-05:00International Original Dungeons & Dragons DayInternational Original Dungeons & Dragons Day, the 45th Anniversary of Original Dungeons & Dragons is today January 26th as we continue our celebration of International Original Dungeons & Dragons Month.

The original game is no longer for sale except for places like eBay and even there you have to be careful that you are getting the original version and not an adulterated, watered down version. In the real thing you will find references to balrogs, hobbits, ents and Tolkien himself. The watered down version has halflings and treants.

Over at RPGNOW you can find the adulterated version in pdf form OD&D Dungeons & Dragons Original Edition (0e). Someday, I or someone else may publish instructions on how to replace the missing text in the pdf so that you have the real thing.Daithi MacLiamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164875676148219662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000665341124771922.post-52304059984319518372019-01-01T14:43:00.001-05:002019-01-01T14:43:08.104-05:00Celebrating the 45th Anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I and others are celebrating the 45th Anniversary of the publication of Dungeons & Dragons (the Original) in January of 1974. Who's not celebrating? WotC for one, if you go to their D&D homepage this morning there is no acknowledgement of the 45th Anniversary of D&D. If I am still around five years from now I wonder if they will remember the 50th Anniversary?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Original Dungeons and Dragons is very intuitive and easy to learn. The players don't need to know the rules beyond a very few basics that the referee can quickly impart and character creation takes only a few minutes and you can be playing immediately. This is a game of exploration and discovery in a fantasy medieval environment and the main requirement for players is curiosity and imagination. Those who are decisive will excel and those who suffer from chronic indecisiveness and lack confidence will quickly replace those with a confident, decisive demeanor as they grow into the roles they choose.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the original game, the Three Little Brown Books, there are three classes: fighting-men (and women), magic-users and clerics. Many claim that is boring because the rules do not give them endless tweaks to customize their character. They could not be more wrong about that. You see in the original game, players were expected to customize their characters through play and a good to excellent referee is expected to play his part in facilitating that process by providing an interesting, fascinating living world for the character to live in. When character are cookie cutter mirror images of one another, that is not the fault of the game. The tools are there, but it takes imagination and thinking outside the box to use them.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The secret is spelled out in the rules themselves, don't play by the book, the "rules" are mere guidelines and a jumping off point from which you can go anywhere. Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax never played by the book and you should not play by the book either. Contrary to what many fake old school "experts" and the forums they inhabit claim, there is no one true way to play. They try to bind people to playing only by the book and thus lead people astray and away from the chance to experience for themselves old school play.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you choose to limit yourself by playing by the book you are free to do that, just don't lie and claim to be old school when you do it. Playing by the book is a valid option, it is just not an old school option. Old school is defined solely by the way Arneson and Gygax played in their own campaigns and it is this, "Follow the spirit of the rules and not the letter." Old school is the way of freedom, not the way of shackles and limitations of massive rule sets and by the book play. If you choose to be shackled and limited with by the book play, be my guest and have fun that way, just don't pretend that is the old school way.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Let's spend this month celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Original Dungeons & Dragons and International Original Dungeons & Dragons Month <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">together.Daithi MacLiamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164875676148219662noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000665341124771922.post-52400875719517453042018-10-05T19:02:00.003-04:002021-09-11T04:22:52.768-04:00The Most Complete List (Dave Arneson Day & Blackmoor Week - 2018)

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Now we are here on Dave Arneson Game Day, a day that unfortunately the world at large remains completely ignorant of. I went this morning a couple of hours ago to the WotC website [WotC] and was not surprised to see that they are ignoring Dave Arneson's Birthday.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">So if you are reading this or one of a tiny handful of other blogs then you will know that today is indeed Dave Arneson's birthday. The thing to ask yourself is why are there only a tiny handful of blogs and a only a couple of other places that celebrate Dave Arneson's Birthday? Especially considering that none of those blogs or forums would exist but for Dave Arneson.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">As of 11AM EDT Dragonsfoot forums (nothing), Knights & Knaves Alehouse (nothing), and Original D& D (nothing). Now over on The Comeback Inn The Comeback Inn there are today several threads some with real goodies. And over on The Piazza there is a thread that shares some of the same links as The Comeback Inn.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Over on The Ruins of Murkhill Forum there is this thread Blackmoor Week and Dave Arneson Game Day where they have been celebrating both Blackmoor Week (the only ones this year) and Dave Arneson Game Day with as of last night 39 blog posts so far and more to be added today.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Goodman Games is AFAIK the only game company to post anything and they have posted a two part Dave Arneson Homage yesterday and today. “Who in the World is Dave Arneson?” A Dave Arneson Homage, Part 1 of 2 by James Maliszewski and I'll link to the second part once it is up.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">EDIT: Learning from Dave Arneson’s Published Works A Dave Arneson Homage, Part 2 of 2 by James Maliszewski
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">We are collecting the links so late tonight or tomorrow I will post all the links we have found.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">So are you gaming today or did you game over the weekend. We did, as part of our circumnavigation of the world as they near the end of a multi-year trek, they are now over 40 years of game time into the journey and out of the original 12 characters only 3 have survived this far. They are closer to the end of the journey than they know. Yesterdays game was all on shipboard on the wide ocean and as they approached some islands they were beset by pirates. I hope to post about that in a few days.

The First Fantasy Campaign has been looked at a little here and there over the years, but I want to call your attention to the best and most extensive review that I am aware of. To do that we have to call back to the year 2009 at one of the better blogs, in fact if I would going to rate blogs it would be in my top five and it is Rob Conley's Bat in the Attic blog. He wrote his review in four parts.

Into the First Fantasy Campaign Part 1 as an aside in the comments there is a link to a relevant blog post Original Blackmoor Maps, but back to the review.

History remembers Statesmen, Philosophers, Kings, and Conquerors. Dave Arneson was none of those. He merely figured out a cool way to have fun that wasn't seen before. Yet in the last quarter of the 20th century and continued into the 21st century his legacy has impacted millions and ignited fires of imagination that still burns today. And it started in a place that only existed in Dave's mind, a place called Blackmoor.

All so very true.

Then we come across a hand sketch by Dave of countryside around Blackmoor. He also make a note that in redrawing this for the map in First Fantasy Campaign that he redrew it to line up with Wilderlands of High Fantasy. The southwest corner of Blackmoor lines up with the northern border of the Valley of the Ancients.

The whole book is full of these kinds of gems and nuggets of gold.

Into the First Fantasy Campaign Part 2

Also there two illustrations; one of the Comeback Inn, and the other of the Main Gate to Blackmoor Castle. The town maps is one of the better early maps I seen. The most unusual feature is that the town plan is drawn 45 degrees to the grid.

Next we start reading about Blackmoor Castle, the Haunted Rooms, the Catacombs, the Tower, and then a more detailed list of the Haunted Rooms. The map shows the castle from the basement to the 5th floor. Again much of it drawn 45 degrees to the grid. This unusual mapping technique persists throughout many of the map shown in FFC.

Into the First Fantasy Campaign Part 3

You remember how in OD&D Outdoor Survival is listed as one of the resources to run D&D with? Well here is where that came from.

We first start off with a little tidbit that they started using the Outdoor Survival Board after the first year but it wasn't until the third year of play they moved into it. He is goes on to describe the change to the game that resulted because of increasing wandering outdoors.

Then this mysterious statement

Next comes a section called "Magic" Protection Point. Now for a long time this section and the sparseness of the following entries didn't make much sense. It wasn't until I was reading the various old school blogs that I finally had a good guess at what happening.

Yes, you will have to go to his blog to find out what he surmised.

Into the First Fantasy Campaign Part 4

The next section after the dungeons is Magic Swords & Matrix. Here Dave Arneson give a pair of tables to generate magic swords. The first 'Magic Swords Personality Matrix "Blackmoor" is a bit confusing. At the beginning there is are a list of entries.

Then we get to the Matrix which generates Magic Swords through a series of tables using percentile dice. Interesting that we have Holy Swords, Fighter's Swords, AND Magician's Sword. I guess we know how Dave dealt with the issue of Gandalf wielding a sword.

Yes, that is correct, it really is old school for a Magic-User to use a magic sword.

He closes with this thought

Tomorrow concluding thoughts.

That turned into three weeks later and then he posted this.

Reflections on the First Fantasy Campaign (and First Dungeons)

My appreciation of the First Fantasy Campaign (my review in Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4) didn't really strike until a decade after I bought it. While I like the "window" it opened on the early days, as practical product it left a lot to be desired. But then after a few years of GMing I found myself with same collection of jumbled notes for the Majestic Wilderlands. They meander through different topics, most incomplete and sadly holes from lost fragments. After that realization I appreciated the First Fantasy Campaign a lot more.

The next paragraph is gold, you really do want to read it.

I wanted to highlight this series of blog posts and encourage Rob Conley to compile it into a pdf and distribute it. This review needs to be out in peoples hands.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">OK, just finished a fun game and getting ready for dinner and when that is over, we'll watch OSU hopefully destroy Penn State. Hope that you got some gaming in today and I also hope you are a football fan.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So hopefully tomorrow I will find the energy to tell you about our game today. So I'm out of here, time for food and football.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Oh and if you did not get to game this today, then make plans to do so soon. Raise a glass to the memory of Dave Arneson and Blackmoor.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Update: Ohio State escapes Penn State with a win 27-26 when Penn State on 4th and 5 makes a bad call and doesn't put the ball in the hands of their quarterback who gained 175 yards rushing. That mistake gave OSU the win. I never would have thought OSU could play that bad and walk away with a win.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">As for me, I'm getting with some friends and plan to spend Saturday gaming. We're doing it like Dave Arneson, a fully home brewed world and the game never slows down it just keeps moving fast and free. A pure sandbox, with thousands of hooks, a living world, no tracks, no scripts, real D&D. The players decisions move the game in any direction they want to go.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I admit, I am spoiled, I have no decision challenged players. If your players are decision challenged? If they dither and debate? If hours pass and they are still trying to make a decision, it is your fault as the referee. Wandering monsters and TPK's are a beautiful thing. Your players will learn that when you make decisions in seconds in real time, when the game moves at a breakneck pace, when both players and the ref are pushed to your limits, then you can find the magic that takes immersion deeper and deeper and makes the game come alive.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Your players have to learn to follow their instincts, learn not to over think things, learn not to react, but to take the initiative and act. In sports the aggressor has an advantage, when playing D&D the aggressor has an advantage. I am not talking about killing everything in sight, none of that murderhobo garbage, no I am talking about being proactive instead of waiting for things to happen. He who hesitates, loses. Don't be a loser, be proactive and decisive and survive and thrive.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Play like Dave Arneson, survive and thrive!

I posted back in 2015 about the Misattribution in a Signature over on the Troll Lords forums of one of my quotes and since I don't go to the Troll Lords forums, I assumed that it would be fixed, since it is such a minor thing and sieg posts under the name sieg lots of places in current use.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">To recap, sieg, claims in his signature that Tim Kask said this

Always remember, as a first principle of all D&D: playing BtB is not now, never was and never will be old school.

But that is not true, it is a quote of mine that I had in my signature for a long time preceding the linked posting with Tim Kask in the linked thread at Dragonsfoot.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">So I checked the other day and to my surprise this was never corrected.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">So I went to Troll Lords forums and created an account, which I didn't really want to do since they don't produce any products that I have any interest in, since none of them are what I would consider old school or even to have old school roots.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">So I posted in this thread and requested that it be fixed. I laid my case out and I closed with this statement

Seeing as how @sieg has not logged in here in about 8 years, I don't suppose there is anyway to get his signature corrected, but it would be nice if it could be.
Thank you for your time, Crimhthan The Great

I was a model of civility in my post, so the response I got was to be mocked by several posters, including sieg who now goes by DMMike. The last response in the thread I saw was dated Monday August 27, 2018 at 9:15PM. If anyone responded after that I am now unable to see the thread or the forum.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">I originally said back in 2015

Sieg was also posting in that DF thread, but I am not sure why he misattributed the quote, but if anyone is currently a member of DF and/or Troll Lords and knows Sieg please bring it to his attention. Please note that I do not think it was deliberate.

Given my treatment in the thread, I no longer believe that it was not deliberate.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">So I will state that I object to the theft of my IP and I will post about this from time to time to set the record straight and remind people that that IP is mine and not Tim Kask's. I am curious about how Tim Kask feels having my IP attributed to him, but I will probably never know since I do not share any forum memberships with him anymore. He of course is not responsible for any of this.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">On top of that, Troll Lords took the step of banning me without any warning or contact at all. You can imagine what my opinion of Troll Lords is at this point.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">I emailed their Admin, but he did not reply to my email. Somehow I am not surprised.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Update 9/23/18: Still no reply and still no correction. Shame on them.

Update 10/25/18: sieg aka dmmike claims that

Partially true, though I'd wanted to move beyond the sieg persona for a while.

This series from back in 2014 concerns The Braunsteins. The Braunsteins were run by David Wesely and when he went overseas in the military Dave Arneson took them over and continued to run them. They were one of the inspirations for his game Blackmoor which became Dungeons & Dragons after Dave Arneson showed his game to Gary Gygax and Rob Kuntz and group. It is May 25th and time to celebrate Dave Hargrave Day his birthday, he would have been 72 today and still a young man. Unfortunately, he died an untimely death from complications of diabetes in 1988. Dave Hargrave also known as The Dream Weaver, was the designer of the Arduin campaign and the author of the Arduin Grimoire.

Arduin also known as Arduin, Bloody Arduin is one of the greatest campaign world's ever committed to paper and it easily surpasses everything created by WotC. Dave Hargrave in his grimoire published hundreds of ideas and these days these ideas are put in print in new products and the authors and publishers pretend these are new ideas instead of stolen ideas. Why they don't want to give the idea creators credit is anyone's guess, but it is so, so wrong.

The Arduin Trilogy is available over at RPGNow and is described as follows

564 pages of Arduin History...
The original three books:

The Arduin Grimoire (Arduin Grimoire volume 1)

Welcome to Skull Tower (Arduin Grimoire volume 2)

The Runes of Doom (Arduin Grimoire volume 3)

The volume that came after:

Arduin Adventure

And a whole lot more!
BY: David A. Hargrave
These are the volumes that started it all. These books inspired tons of RPG's, authors and fans alike. Let your imagination set wild and come back to the old Arduin Grimoire series to re-inspire you from old or create inspiration of new! There will certainly be something of value in these Grimoires for all. New rules, monsters, items, spells, character classes, races and more… all from the World of Arduin, for use in any and ALL role playing game systems - past present and future!
This was Emperors Choice first attempt to organize the large amount of material presented in the original Arduin game system. While reorganized and placed with a new typeset, imagery and tables it maintains its original presentation.

Emperors Choice is now seemingly dead and the Arduin IP languishes in purgatory. Only a few books are available at RPGNow but right now you can get the bundle of all the books and items that are available over at RPGNow for $51.95 instead of the full price of $102.84. Entire Arduin Digital Collection [BUNDLE]

In my opinion either the Trilogy or the Bundle are a good deal and you should try to get one or the other while you still can. The IP holder has not responded to email and stopping shipping hard copies multiple years ago and could pull the plug on everything. Dave Hargrave's Arduin is Classic and has a lot to teach and illuminate.

Happy Birthday to Dave Hargrave and here is hoping that your IP can be brought out of moth balls and made fully available once again.Daithi MacLiamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164875676148219662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000665341124771922.post-58242563945376609242018-05-13T21:06:00.002-04:002018-05-13T21:06:20.162-04:00Chirine ba Kal's blog post and "Pre-School Gaming"

See Chrine ba Kal and his Truth Bomb blog post titled Pre-School Gaming - Before 'Old School' and 'New School" meaning of course game play as originally done by Dave Arneson, Phil Barker aka M.A.R. Barker and Gary Gygax back pre-publication. All three of which continued to play the same way all their lives. What about Gygax you may say, well Gygax played the same way his whole life; however a short time after D&D was published he started preaching a different way for others to play, although he never followed his own very bad Standard Play advice, which required the use a purchased module from TSR instead of doing it yourself the original way.

"Pre-School Gaming" and I have also seen it called "Original School Gaming" and this new term is really needed ever since the Murder Hobo Module Slaves stole the term "Old School" and corrupted its meaning. Old School used to mean how Dave, Phil and Gary played, but not anymore. Old School has been corrupted to mean those that pretend to be Old School while playing with purchased modules, railroaded game play and the juvenile and immature murderhobo trope. DISCLAIMERL: I am not saying that the murderhobo trope is Bad Wrong Fun. The murderhobo trope is fun for many people, but fun or not it is still juvenile and immature and always a big hit with 10-12 years olds. If you are 25 or 35 or 45 or 55 or whatever and you enjoy the murderhobo trope that is perfectly fine, but don't pretend it is not juvenile and immature, don't pretend (and prevaricate) that it is the original play style, because it is not the original play style.

My original quote was "Always remember, as a first principle of all D&D: playing BtB is not now, never was and never will be old school." I guess I will have to update date it and replace "old school" with "pre-school/original school."
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Dungeons and Mega-Dungeons in OD&D.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In the original Dungeons & Dragons published in 1974 the focus of the game was (and is) exploration. Whether you are in the Wilderness or in a Dungeon the focus is exploration.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you were running a campaign that was more dungeon focused, it often evolved into a Mega-Dungeon. A basic dungeon is described as
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">A good dungeon will have no less than a dozen levels down, with offshoot levels in addition, and new levels under construction so that players will never grow tired of it. There is no real limit to the number of levels, nor is there any restriction on their size (other than the size of graph paper available). "Greyhawk Castle", for example, has over a dozen levels in succession downwards, more than that number branching from these, and not less than two new levels under construction at any given time.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">A Mega-Dungeon is when this basic dungeon reaches maturity and the size and number of levels continues to grow as it is developed. A true Mega-Dungeon is impossible to fully explore. If the players ever finish a dungeon, then it was not a Mega-Dungeon.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">A few definitions are in order
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Mega-Dungeon is a massive dungeon that goes way beyond a basic dozen levels with twenty or more being typical. They also typical have over 200 room or spaces per level - not counting sublevels.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Campaign Dungeon is a meaningless term, since if play is restricted to just a dungeon you do not have a campaign, you have a limited sample game.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Campaign is a full fleged OD&D game where all parts of a campaign are present being Dungeons, Towns/Cities, Wilderness, Sea-Going and mulitple planes.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Choke Point is when options become very limited and things become linear aka railroads. This is not a feature of old school campaigns. The opposite of Choke Point is normal design.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Dungeon levels have full footprints as you go deeper into the dungeon.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Dungeon sub-levels have partial footprints and are usually have fewer access points than is normal for a level. To avoid the spector of the railroad, it is suggested that at least three access point be provided, although some can be through secret doors or other types of access. It is also suggested that they have at least three ways out. It is acceptable for the way in to be different from the way out or for them to be difficult to find.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Unique areas can be present that are isolated (but not railroaded) from other areas.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Rooms and chambers differ in that chambers are large rooms that have or had a specific purpose rather than a general purpose, such as, an audience chamber.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Chutes are ways to rapidly get from upper levels to lower levels although sometimes they operate the opposite way. They are often found behind secret doors or combined with a pit trap or trapdoors. Chutes are completely enclosed throughout their length.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Slides are also between levels but differ in that they are not completely enclosed so that one could roll or jump off of one along the way.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Portal is a door between different worlds or planes with usually minor clues to tell players the type of choice they are about to make.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Underworld aka Underdark is the entire complexity of underground campaign areas of which dungeons and mega-dungeon are just one small part.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Lairs are really tiny dungeons of only a few rooms or areas.

The SJW(s) can't stand The RPGPundit because he is pro-freedom and stands against censorship. I agree with him on some things and abhor his stance on other things, but I do support his right to hold those positions and advocate for them. The SJW(s) desire a one-note echo chamber and believe that only their views should be protected by free speech and that all opposing views should be permanently silenced.
In short, if someone was responsible for trying to sabotage Lion & Dragon on RPGnow, they're probably kicking themselves right now.

First, all the good news; and basically, this is all about YOU. Against
ALL odds, and in spite of essentially losing all its viable links TWICE
in the last 4 days, Lion & Dragon has made it back into the top 15!
As of this writing, thanks to all the people who came forward and
purchased the game, it went from being way down at #30 and dropping, all
the way up to currently #13 and rising on the bestseller list for
RPGnow.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
I want to thank all the people who have stepped up and helped spread the
word. The ones who bought the game obviously, but also the ones who
made the effort to share the links to the new L&D URL and telling other people about what had happened.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On the best selling list he is back up to number 13 right now, who know what it would be if OBS hadn't taken a leave of absence from ethics. EDIT: <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">now up t<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">o number 11.
